A local source told the Arakan news agency that the Myanmar authorities have tightened control over the remaining Rohingya Muslims in the city of Buthidaung in Arakan state, preventing them from communicating with the media and owning or speaking on a mobile phone.
Police seized a number of mobile phones and accused them of spying and espionage, police said. Some activists were filming violations by the Myanmar army against the Rohingya and sending pictures and video footage to various media outlets earlier, authorities said.
According to the source, the police arrested a number of people who were seen in the street using the phone and imposed heavy fines on them.
