Local sources in Arakan State reported that Myanmar’s air force carried out an airstrike targeting parts of Mungdaw city, resulting in the destruction of at least five homes and damage to facilities under the control of Buddhist Arakan militias (Arakan Army), with injuries reported among militia members and detained civilians.
Residents said the strike targeted areas that were former military bases near the villages of Kyaing Chaung NaKhaKa (7) and Ngan Chaung at around 11 p.m. on December 27. A Y-12 aircraft dropped three 500-pound bombs during the attack.
“One of the bombs hit former Myanmar military facilities now occupied by the Arakan militias,” a local resident told Arakan News Agency.
Some reports indicated that several injured civilians later died due to inadequate medical treatment, though the agency could not independently verify these claims.
According to Narinjara News, at least five civilian homes were burned or destroyed, and no official statements have been issued by the Myanmar military or Arakan militias regarding the airstrike.
The attack comes amid ongoing military escalation in the region, following the Arakan militias’ takeover of Mungdaw city on December 8, 2024, during their campaign launched in November 2023 to control Arakan State.
The militias managed to seize 14 out of 17 towns, in a conflict that has heavily affected the Rohingya, who have faced violence, forced displacement, and persecution from both sides. The Rohingya were previously subjected to a 2017 “genocide” campaign by the Myanmar military, which forced nearly one million to flee to Bangladesh.
