A Myanmar court on Wednesday sentenced an ultra-nationalist monk to three months in jail for organizing a protest without permission outside the US embassy in April 2016 against a US official using the term Rohingya.
Parmaukkha has spent a full month in prison since being arrested at the end of last year for organizing a demonstration without authorization from the authorities following the use of the term “Rohingya” by the US Mission.
He was among seven nationalist hardliners, including three monks, and four of them were released at the time.

His Lawyer said that his client, who could have been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, received a minimum prison sentence “because the judge took into account that he was a cleric and a monk.”
Many in Myanmar deny that Rohingya is an indigenous ethnic group and claim to be illegal Bangladeshi migrants from Bangladesh.
