Myanmar’s Deputy Minister of Home Affairs said the army had formed at least 596 Buddhist militia groups in Arakan province, only 30 of them in the conflict-torn city of Maungdaw in Arakan province and had seen violence against Rohingya Muslims.
According to the Irrawaddy, He said the army is providing firearms training to groups in several of these towns.
Deputy Minister of Home Affairs did not say whether the army was supplying its own weapons to the militias or allowing them to use hand-held rifles.
On 25th August, about six months after the militia began to be trained, the Myanmar army launched a military campaign that killed at least 6,000 Rohingya people and left over 680,000 people in Bangladesh.
