Myanmar authorities sentenced four Rohingyas to death in Myanmar and 26 others were sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison for involvement in an attack on security forces in October 2016.
Authorities did not address charges against its security forces, which launched a military campaign in which Human Rights Watch said it had committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing.
“The court sentenced four Rohingyas to death,” the Irrawaddy newspaper quoted Deputy Judge as saying, adding that the number of defendants had reached 45 people initially charged under articles 303, 326, 33 and 34 of the Penal Code.
According to the same newspaper, 34 other Rohingyas were sentenced to 18 years in prison on other charges.
The Myanmar authorities accuse the Rohingya of assaulting security men in Arakan state, but the Rohingya elders confirmed that this was self-defense after the security forces committed crimes against humanity, raped their women, killed their children and confiscated their property.
