The Indonesian capital of Jakarta witnessed a mass demonstration to denounce the massacres of the Rohingya Muslims in Arakan province, Myanmar.
On Sunday morning, a large number of protesters gathered on Jakarta’s Pondrane Street and raised banners reading “Save the Muslims of Arakan” and “Will we let them die?”
The protesters also chanted slogans and petitions for Arakan Muslims, as well as fundraising funds for Rohingya.
“We are doing what we can to stop the massacres against Arakan Muslims,” said Lukman Aziz Korniawan, one of the organizers of the demonstration.
“We hope that the Indonesian government will take concrete steps to defend the Muslims of Arakan.”
Since 25 August, the Myanmar army has committed massive human rights violations north of Arakan province, using excessive force against Rohingya Muslims, according to media reports.
On Saturday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement that the number of Rohingya refugees fleeing the Arakan region to Bangladesh has increased to 60,000 since August 25.
On Aug. 28, the European Rohingyi Council (independent rights) announced the killing of between two thousand and three thousand Muslims, in attacks of the army in Arakan (Rakhine), in just 3 days.
