Rohingya Man Killed by Landmine Explosion in Arakan

A Rohingya man named Monzur Alom, 32, was killed on Monday after stepping on a landmine while herding his cattle in Mingalargyi village, in Maungdaw township, Arakan State, western Myanmar.

A local villager told Arakan News Agency that the explosion occurred at around 5 PM yesterday, severing the man’s leg below the knee. He died while being transported to a hospital in Bangladesh for treatment.

The explosion occurred while the victim was tending to his cattle, highlighting the ongoing danger of landmines in the region.

In a previous incident on May 2, 2025, a 16-year-old boy from Ponn Gyar village, in northern Maungdaw, lost one of his legs after stepping on a landmine near the border fence while fishing.

Additionally, two teenagers, including a girl who suffered a leg amputation, were seriously injured after stepping on a leftover landmine while collecting firewood in Mrauk-U township, Arakan State.

According to unofficial statistics, the month of March saw one civilian killed and 20 others injured in Arakan State due to explosions from unexploded ordnance and landmines.

This includes two people seriously injured in separate landmine incidents in Toungup and Thandwe, and a woman in her 40s who suffered severe leg injuries after stepping on a landmine in Minbya township.

A Rohingya man also lost his entire left leg due to a landmine explosion in La Tha village, Maungdaw. Another man lost a leg and sustained shrapnel injuries to his face in a landmine blast in Pyot Kyun village, Ann township.

Similarly, a young Rohingya man lost a leg and sustained serious injuries to his eye and hand after a landmine explosion in Shwe Zar village, Maungdaw.
