Several Rohingya Muslims have been seriously injured by landmines they appear to have stepped on during their journey from violence in Myanmar.
Aziz Ul Haq, a 15-year-old boy, lost his legs due to a landmine explosion and is now receiving treatment in Bangladesh.
Aziz’s mother said that when he arrived at the hospital his legs were broken and that his brother had the same fate but was transferred to another hospital. “Their injuries are as bad as if they are dead, it is better if Allah take them, they are suffering very much.”
Sabohur Nahar, a 50-year-old woman receiving treatment at the same hospital, said she was trampled on a landmine at the border while fleeing with her three children after the soldiers shot at her and her family.
Doctors at the hospital visited by the BBC in Bangladesh say that “the hospital has seen a large influx of people injured by landmine explosions.”
The Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the status of the Rohingya Muslims, after Sweden and Britain have demanded an urgent meeting as international fears grow of violence in Arakan province.
