Rohingyas in Maungdaw and Buthidaung in Arakan State complained about the repeated attacks on them by Buddhists extremists with the complicity of the security forces. One of the locals from the city of Buthidaung on condition of anonymity for security reasons said “I did not leave the house, even in the days of Eid, in light of the terrorist campaign carried out by gangs of Buddhists with the official forces that provide them security cover. He added: wandering between Rohingya neighborhoods in the late hours of the night, they broke into the homes and kidnapped young people, take them to hidden locations where they are beaten and tortured for several days; before being released in exchange for excessive amounts of money. We live here with our women and children in a real horror, we do not know when this will ends. According to local observers these attacks come after the Rohingyas successfully performed Eid prayers in a number of regions and cities in Arakan state; and that is what raised the ire of extremist Buddhist groups led by famous Buddhist monk Ashin Wirathu, who expressed extreme displeasure with the government’s position in Myanmar about it.
