The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that any approach aimed at resolving the conflict in Arakan State must be comprehensive and reflect a joint effort with the Government of Myanmar.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Armanatha Naser said that given the fragile situation in Myanmar, a comprehensive approach in cooperation with the Myanmar government was essential to ensure “effective support”.
Armanatha was responding to a recent interview by the Jakarta Globe on the situation in Arakan state in western Myanmar where a UN mission is investigating allegations of rape, torture and indiscriminate killing of Rohingya Muslims by the Myanmar armed forces.
“Ultimately, what we are trying to do is find a solution, and we are not trying to point fingers or shame and blame,” Armantha said, stressing that the best possible solution would include coordination and partnership with the Myanmar government.
Indonesia has been active in its support for a peaceful solution to the Arakan crisis, which involves the building of schools and medical facilities in the region.
Since last October, Arakan has been the target of a military campaign against Rohingya in which systematic forces committed crimes against humanity from murder, rape and burning.
