Noor Mohammed: An Inner Vision That Sees Light Through the Darkness of Displacement

10 September 2026

In the heart of Bangladesh’s refugee camps, crowded with hardship and sorrow, 21-year-old Noor Mohammed is writing an extraordinary story that transcends physical limitations and the harsh realities of displacement.

Fate deprived him of the gift of sight and gave him a frail body, yet his sincerity and determination enable him to achieve what many able-bodied people may struggle to accomplish. His name itself seems both a symbol and a truth: Noor, meaning light, a light by which others may find their way, and an inner vision that sees what the eyes of the sighted may fail to perceive.

Noor Mohammed was born in the city of Akyab, in Arakan. When displacement uprooted his family, he found himself living as a refugee in the camps.

There, amid the hardships of exile, he chose neither withdrawal nor surrender to the darkness surrounding his sight. Instead, he chose what he believed to be the noblest of paths. He held firmly to the Book of Allah, making it his goal and his refuge.

You may come across him in the narrow alleys of the camp, holding his mobile phone, and a question naturally comes to mind: How can someone who cannot see the letters memorise the Qur’an?

In a place where even the most basic necessities of life are scarce, and where a Braille Qur’an is unavailable, Noor Mohammed refused to remain helpless. He turned his simple phone into a means of learning, listening repeatedly to Qur’anic verses and reciting them after the recording, relying on determination, patience and constant repetition.

He has not walked this path alone. His friends in the camp have become guides and companions, explaining what he cannot access on his own and helping him continue along the road toward his goal.

His greatest motivation is to fulfil a wish his parents have held since his childhood: to see him become a hafiz of the Qur’an. He also carries another dream: to become a scholar who serves his faith, teaches others and continues to honour his father through prayer and devotion.

Noor Mohammed expresses his unwavering philosophy with simple certainty:

“If we truly want something and make the effort for it, we will reach it with ease.”

Between the silence of his phone, the sound of Qur’anic verses and his own recitation, Noor Mohammed proves that true light is not carried by the eyes, but awakened in the heart, and that the Book of Allah remains a flame that neither the darkness of loss nor the walls of exile can extinguish.
