Myanmar’s Catholic Christian cardinal Charles Maung Bo warned of the risk of a military coup in the country because of the fragility of democracy and the weakness of Aung San Suu Kyi’s government.
“Suu Kyi faces a huge challenge because the army continues to control all key ministries, such as the interior, defense and border affairs,” Maung said in a letter to Time magazine published in this week’s issue.
The Cardinal called on the Myanmar government to “avoid any wrong steps that might erase the dream of democracy.”
“All the hidden forces in Myanmar are demanding the return of military rule.”
Maung criticized the silence of the chancellor regarding the crisis faced the Muslim Rohingyas in Arakan province.
“Suu Kyi is now part of the government, a political leader, and certainly she should have spoken.” Arakan’s citizens face enormous suffering, exacerbated by decades of neglect and ill-treatment, and there is no quick solution. ”
According to local media, the Myanmar chancellor is scheduled to give a public address on the Rohingya crisis on Tuesday, after being subjected to international pressure.
Maung Bo is the first Christian cleric from Myanmar to join the Vatican Cardinals’ compound, which is charged with electing the Pope of the Catholic Church.
The Rohingya Muslims in Arakan province have been subjected to genocide by the Myanmar army since August 25th.
There is no clear statistics on the victims of the genocide, but a human rights activist in Arakan told Anadolu that they had spotted 7,500 people dead and 6,541 wounded from Rohingya since the start of the genocide campaign until September 6th.
Last Tuesday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, said the number of Rohingyas who fled Bangladesh since the start of the latest genocide in August was 400,000.
