French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Monday expressed strong support for Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, amid criticism of her administration of the Rohingya crisis, stressing that it guarantees the demands of the United Nations.
“I have accepted these demands in a very courageous way because the political conditions of their government are not easy,” Jean-Yves Le Drian said after meeting with Nobel Peace Prize laureate on the sidelines of a Euro-Asian ministerial meeting in
Naypyidaw, the administrative capital of Myanmar.
“All this is new, this is a strategy, but it is difficult for them to implement it.”
Myanmar has been embroiled in turmoil since late August and has been accused by the United Nations of ethnic cleansing of Rohingya, a Muslim minority living in the west of the country.
