The European Rohingya Council on Wednesday called on the Bangladeshi government to reconsider the agreement it signed with its Myanmar counterpart to repatriate the Rohingya refugees.
In a statement, the council appealed to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid and her compatriots to review the Arakan refugees’ return to their homes to make their return sustainable, reliable and honorable.
Bangladesh has repeatedly called for the return of Rohingya refugees to their country, and an agreement was signed between the two governments on November 23.
Two days ago, 100 houses were burned in the border town of Tambro, Bangladesh, where Rohingya refugees were supposed to return when the agreement between the two countries was implemented.
In December, Bangladesh’s Minister of Roads and Bridges Obaidul Quadersaid some 100,000 Rohingya refugees would be returned to Myanmar in January, with no exact date.
According to several international human rights organizations, the number of villages of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, which have been burned by the 350 villages, exceeds the number of satellite images.
The ongoing crimes against Rohingya in Arakan province, which has been committed by the Myanmar army and extremist Buddhist groups for years, have resulted in the use of some 826,000 Bangladeshis, including 656,000 who have fled since August 25, according to the United Nations.
