Myanmar authorities recently proceeded to prevent Rohingya from teaching their children the Quran and the principles of the Islamic religion, a step described by local observers as serious in the long term on the future of the Islamic presence in Arakan State.
Agency correspondent reported that authorities had summoned dozens of Rohingya teachers in a number of South Maungdaw city neighborhoods, and forced them to sign a written pledge not to return in the future to engage in teaching the Quran or anything related to Islamic religion even inside their homes, adding that teachers had received threats to punish them in prison for more than ten years in the event of violating this resolution, and that they would remain under the control of the authorities during the coming period, pointing out that there are indications that the authorities sought to disseminate this decision to other neighborhoods and cities in the state of Arakan.
It is worth mentioning that the Myanmar authorities had proceeded under the previous military government on the closure of many mosques and schools following the events of violence against contrived Rohingya in 2012, and still remains on the position to this day, despite the democratic changes in the country’s system of government.
