Arakan Rohingya Union ARU Director General Dr. Wakar Uddin with U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations Leadership met with State Department officials in Washington on Rohingya crisis.
The U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations delegation included USCMO Secretary General, Oussama Jammal, Executive Director of CAIR, Nihad Awad, Director General of Arakan Rohingya Union, Dr. Wakar Uddin, National Policy Director of AMP, Dr. Osama Abuirshaid, Director of Policy and Advocacy in Muslim American Political Action Committee, Hoda Hawa, and Director of Outreach in MUNA, Mir Masoom Ali.
Collective work on Rohingya issues between State Department and U.S. Muslim leadership was strongly emphasized in the meeting. Muslim leadership team and U.S. Government discussed taking concrete steps on a variety of issues faced by Rohingya ethnic minority in Burma, including immediate cessation of military assault on Rohingya villages, urgent humanitarian aid, repatriation and protection of refugees and IDPs, basic human rights, citizenship, and long term community development issues. Muslim leadership team expressed its deep appreciation for the U.S. Government’s support for the Rohingya people and its call on the Myanmar Government to immediately stop the violence against Rohingya and protection of the civilian population.
The State Department meeting was followed by a meeting at the Embassy of Norway. Norway expressed grave concern over the situation in Northern Arakan, and gave assurance to the Muslim delegation that Norway continues to provide various forms of support for the Rohingya victims and calls on the Government of Myanmar to stop the violence.
