Residents of Arakan State in western Myanmar confirmed that the continuous heavy rainfall over the past two months has caused floods, communication disruptions, and shortages of supplies in many villages.
A resident of the city of “Maungdaw” said that ever since May, persistent rains have flooded several villages, preventing residents from leaving their homes to work and seek sustenance, while no relief efforts are underway due to the severe shortage of food.
Narinjara News Network reported that the heavy rains also caused power outages, forcing residents to resort to using solar panels to charge their mobile phones. It also resulted in communication breakdowns between different villages in “Maungdaw.”
The Bay of Bengal experienced three low-pressure areas between June 13 to 30, leading to continuous rain across Arakan State, which caused widespread flooding and destruction. According to Myanmar’s Meteorological Department, another low-pressure area is currently forming off the coasts of West Bengal, India.
Arakan State has been experiencing severe rains and flooding since May 26, leading to the inundation of the homes and lands of the Rohingya in the city of “Maungdaw”. The floods also swept through the new main market in the city of “Buthidaung”, causing massive losses and complete destruction. This has also led to a substantial increase in prices, soaring up to nearly seven times.
