Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the Myanmar government’s efforts to maintain social stability in its country must be understood despite the army’s massacre of Rohingya Muslims.

More than 400,000 Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar fled to Bangladesh after a military operation of the security forces.
UN officials described Myanmar’s strategy towards Rohingya as “ethnic cleansing”.But what Wang said in his interview with the Indonesian foreign minister on the sidelines of UN meetings in New York on Tuesday seemed to suggest some sympathy for the government.Wang said the Rohingya issue has long been complex and sensitive, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

“The urgent task is to alleviate the crisis situation as soon as possible and avoid harming innocent people, prevent the spread of the humanitarian crisis and support and encourage Myanmar and Bangladesh to seek an integrated solution through dialogue and consultation,” he said.

Wang said China, which has close economic and diplomatic ties with Myanmar, is determined to continue to play a constructive role with the international community in this regard.

Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday denounced human rights abuses in Arakan state and said those responsible should be punished, but did not address international accusations of ethnic cleansing.
