The Canadian government provided $ 8.15 million in humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
“The government’s aid is aimed at improving the situation of Rohingya refugees in the camps in Bangladesh,” said Marie-Claude Bebo, secretary of international development of the federal government.
She explained in a press statement that the humanitarian aid includes food, medical and hygiene items.
The Minister expressed her deep concern about the situation of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.
“The crisis in Myanmar is one of the biggest and fastest growing humanitarian crises in the world, and our government is helping to meet some of the needs of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh,” said Bebo.
The total humanitarian assistance provided by the Canadian government to the Rohingya refugees amounted to $ 45.6 million.
According to UN data, 688,000 Rohingya Muslims from Arakan province, west of Myanmar, fled to neighboring Bangladesh between 25 August 2017 and 27 January 2018, following attacks by Myanmar army forces and extremist Buddhist militias , Described by international organizations as a “campaign of ethnic cleansing.”
As a result of these attacks, at least 9,000 Rohingya people were killed in the same period, according to the international organization Doctors Without Borders.
