Britain’s international development secretary Penny Mordaunt said the plight of the Rohingya refugees should not be forgotten and would press for necessary changes in Myanmar to help the Rohingya return home.
This came during her second visit today to Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh in the Rohingya refugee camps, where the United Kingdom provides vital humanitarian assistance to one million Rohingya refugees and vulnerable communities in Cox’s Bazaar.
Ms Mordaunt, the first female UK minister to visit Bangladesh since the country’s election, met Rohingya refugees living in Kutupalong camp at the food distribution center.
In Dhaka, Ms. Mordaunt told Bangladeshi ministers that it is now time to look beyond supporting short-term life-saving assistance to give them the skills they need to create a sustainable life for themselves and their families.
This major human-made humanitarian crisis has been ethnic cleansing on an industrial scale, and I urge the Government of Burma to create the necessary conditions that allow those Rohingyas currently living in Bangladesh to return.
She also visited the International Center for Medical Research, a world-renowned medical research center, which also includes a hospital specializing in cholera and other water-borne diseases.
