Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Tuesday it was necessary to exert greater international pressure on Myanmar to repatriate Rohingya refugees to their homes. “The international community should increase pressure on Myanmar to regain its people and ensure their security,” she said in a speech in London.
UN officials say some 700,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh from Arakan State since a military crackdown on them since August amid reports of killings, rapes and arson by Myanmar troops and members of Buddhist committees, something the United Nations likened to “ethnic cleansing”.
Myanmar has denied nearly all of these allegations and has said it is conducting a legitimate operation.
Hasina said Bangladesh had already provided the names of the 8,000 Rohingya families to Myanmar for their return, but had not yet taken them.
