Egyptian and Bangladeshi officials held a meeting to discuss the Myanmar issue and how to protect the Rohingya Muslims from abuses against them by the Myanmar forces.
Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Khaled Tharwat said on Sunday that the Egyptian side was in the first round of political consultations between Egypt and Bangladesh.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs said the meeting marked the beginning of dialogue between the two countries in the light of the historical, cultural and religious relations between the two peoples and the governments of Egypt and Bangladesh. A number of regional issues of common concern, particularly the issue of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. The two officials also stressed the importance of taking the necessary measures by the Government of Myanmar to stop the violations against the Rohingya, provide them with protection and find a lasting solution to the crisis. They also discussed ways and proposals to enhance cooperation in the fields of health, security, ICT, education, energy and agriculture, in addition to enhancing the volume of trade exchange to enhance the level of the distinguished relations between the two countries.
The meeting, which was held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, stressed the importance of setting the date for the second round of political consultations between the two countries at the earliest possible opportunity, to be held in Cairo.
The round of dialogue witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Institute of Diplomatic Studies of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh.
For his part, the head of the Bangladeshi delegation expressed his country’s appreciation for the visit of the Egyptian delegation to hold the first round of political consultations between the two countries at the level of senior officials as a mechanism for constructive dialogue between the two countries with a view to enhancing their cooperation relations in all political and economic fields. Level to discuss developments in regional and international issues of common concern.
