At least five Rohingyas were seriously injured in an attack by Buddhist extremists backed by local police in the city of Rathidaung on Friday morning.
Arakan news agency reported that security forces and Buddhist extremists stormed a Muslim village with dawn prayers and arrested seven of them without giving any reason for the arrest. Local residents resisted police and Buddhists, prevented them from being arrested and managed to save 4 while the authorities left with 3.
According to the agency’s correspondent, he heard the sound of heavy gunfire after dawn prayers and later discovered more than five victims, some of them in critical condition, including women.
Police and Buddhist extremists raided the Muslim village again before (Jumaa) Friday prayers and arrested a 50-year-old man, while most men fled for fear of harm, Rohingya sources said.
In the past few days, the town of Rathidaung has been tense, with a Rohingya man and two of his sons murdered in mysterious circumstances. Local police have been blamed. Several Muslims have been arrested, surrounded by a village, curfews and Muslims has been banned from selling, buying and shopping.
