The British Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, Mark Field, called on the international community to work with Bangladesh to “support Rohingya refugees, including education and livelihoods, during this period of monsoon weather in their camps and also in the long term.”
This came during his visit to Rohingya camps in the city of Cox’s Bazaar in Bangladesh, according to a statement issued by the British Foreign Office on Saturday.
He expressed his sadness at what he saw during his visit to a refugee camp, pointing out that the things he saw would increase his country’s determination to support the refugees and pressure the authorities in Myanmar.
Since September 2017, the country has provided 129 million pounds (about 170 million US dollars) to refugees and host countries.
Since 25 August 2017, the Myanmar army and extremist Buddhist militias have launched a new wave of repression against the Muslim Rohingya minority in Arakan.
The wave of repression, described by the United Nations as “ethnic cleansing”, has displaced nearly 700,000 Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar to Bangladesh, 60 percent of them children, according to UN figures.
It also killed at least 9,000 Rohingya between 25 August and 24 September 2017, according to the international organization Doctors without Borders.
