A person was killed on Thursday by a huge fire that destroyed one of the most famous hotels in Myanmar’s Yangon city and resulted in dark fumes in the center of the country’s biggest city and took hours to set aside.
Authorities told Reuters the cause of the fire was not yet clear and indicated it broke out at around 3:20 am at the Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, which overlooks a lake.
The body of an unidentified person was found in a hotel room and two people were injured by the blaze, said Htay Lwin, spokesman for the hotel’s Htoo Group.
Most of the fire continued until 7:00 am and more than 140 hotel guests moved nearby.
The group is headed by businessman Tay Za, who until last year was on the US sanctions list for his close relationship with Myanmar’s former military regime.
