Political parties in Arakan state of Myanmar demands the government to continue the implementation of Citizenship law of 1982, especially due to the affairs of Rohingyas, which may determine their legal status in the country.

Agency correspondent reported that these parties called on the government as Buddhists are dominant on government positions in Arakan State; because they make up the majority of the population in the state, they claim, adding that a number of the leaders of these parties have threatened not to support the ruling party in the future in the event of suspension of the citizenship law of 1982.

It is worth noting that the previous military government in Myanmar had issued the law in 1982 whereby Rohingyas were designated illegal immigrants in the country after their right of citizenship were usurped, though they were recognized as citizens since the Burma Independence (the former name of the country) from British colonial grip in 1948.
