Myanmar authorities on Monday removed a historic mosque in the city of Maungdaw as part of its systematic campaign to remove Islamic monuments from the region, which has been going on for several years.
Arakan news agency reported that the mosque in the Nazi village dates back dozens of years and has been completely removed by the authorities despite the fact that the mosque is old and has been restored with cement and bricks unlike the buildings in the village, often straw and bamboo sticks.
According to Rohingya activist, the mosque was built by his third grandfather, pointing out that the mosque is not less than 100 years old, which means that it was built before the British colonization.
It should be noted that many historical mosques, which sometimes reached hundreds of years, were removed by the authorities during the military campaign launched by the army and police forces since last August.
