Arakan Commission charged with finding solutions to complex issues in the western state of Arakan said it would submit its final recommendations to the government by mid-August.
“We are sure that we will be able to make the final recommendations to the Myanmar government by mid-August,” said a member of the advisory committee to resolve the situation of Arakan state in an email to Anadolu.
The committee, chaired by former UN Secretary-General Mr.Kofi Annan, said it had been in Geneva to finalize the report in the past few weeks.
The final report contains recommendations for a lasting solution to conflicts between ethnic Buddhists in Arakan and stateless Rohingya Muslims.
“But this will not include recent human rights abuses in northern Arakan,” he said, adding that the Commission’s mandate was to identify the root cause of the problems and not to investigate human rights abuses by the security forces.
Nobel Prize Laureate Kofi Annan was appointed as chairman of the Arakan State Advisory Committee in August last year to advise the government on resolving state issues.
The Commission published its interim report in mid-March containing steps that the Government of Myanmar could take to improve the situation in Arakan immediately, including the urgent training of security forces to improve respect for human rights, close all IDP camps and allow the representation of Muslims in local administrations.
A senior official in the Arakan regional government told Anatolia that they are cooperating with the government of the Union, implementing a number of recommendations of the committee such as humanitarian and media access, training of security forces, birth certificates and bilateral relations with Bangladesh.
